Not many people like to admit that they’re messy, but sometimes you have to face the facts. For some, tidying just doesn’t come naturally and that’s okay! While you may be naturally messy, you might still be yearning for some quick and easy ways to manage your mess better, even just a little bit. No, we aren’t going to make you the next organization guru, but we can help make your space look a little neater than it looks now. Tidying doesn’t mean getting rid of your stuff or changing all of your habits, it just means making it easier for you to control your mess.

1. Put baskets everywhere

One of the biggest culprits of mess is leaving things around everywhere, whether it be on tables, on floors, on furniture, or really anywhere. This can give the illusion of clutter even with just a few items left around. One simple solution to this is baskets. Yes. Baskets, baskets everywhere.

Baskets are easy to throw stuff in and can make your space look a whole lot less cluttered. The trick to using baskets is to have them in most of your cluttered spaces. Though it seems counterintuitive, they should be out in the open so you can put things in them easily. If you hide all your baskets in closets, you won’t ever use them. Make sure you have at least one in your living room and one in your bedroom. Feel free to add others as you please.

While this isn’t necessary for messiness reasons, it is also a good idea to choose some baskets that look cute and match your décor. If you just place a few plastic crates around, chances are that your space isn’t going to look a whole lot better. There are lots of options out there from cloth to wicker to wire to woven. Choose whatever you like best and watch your space become transformed!

2. Manage your entryway

Are you someone that immediately starts discarding things when you step through your door? Perhaps the path from your front door to your living room is a bit of a maze with shoes, jackets, and bags dropped everywhere. This transitional space is a common place for messiness to reside, but it can be fixed with some easy hacks.

The first is to get some hooks for your coats, jackets, and bags. How you decide to put up these hooks and how many to put up is up to you and your situation. You may want to get a coat rack with lots of if different hooks so that you don’t have to damage your walls. On the other hand, you may want to nail in some more permanent fixtures. These hooks will give you a quick and easy place to hang your things while going in and out the door.

Next, you’ll need a place for your shoes. Again, you have lots of options when it comes to this. You could try just getting a simple shoe rack to leave by the door or invest in some baskets or drawers to place your shoes in.

3. Grab some trays

Much like baskets, trays are great for creating the illusion of tidiness without much work. When you have things placed randomly across tables and countertops, they are going to look messy regardless of how you try and arrange them. With a few carefully placed trays, you can make some of this mess look intentional and therefore much more appealing.

Trays can go almost anywhere that you have a lot of items just sitting in an open area. They are especially great for coffee tables and holding remotes among other things. Trays can also be really helpful in bathrooms where you have lots of little bottles of things, as well as kitchen counters. If you’re someone who has a lot of jewelry that tends to get lost or tangled on a dresser, try using a tray to put place it nicely in one area.

If you’re someone who frequently loses things like keys, try having a designated tray to hold them and other like items. If you can, try placing this tray near the door that you leave and enter from so that it will be easy to place them there when you return and grab them before you leave.

Conclusion

Mess can often be unavoidable. There are lots of situations that can lead to a mess, especially if you are a college student that shares spaces with others.
